Do you have a newborn, one month, or two-month-old? Are you unsure what to do with them while they are awake? Here are 10 ways to entertain your newborn – 2-month-old.
When my son was born I was so excited to begin interacting with him. I knew newborns were fragile, but I was naive to the fact that newborns are very limited in what they can and can’t do. Over time I learned different activities to keep my little one entertained. Many of these activities also help them to grow developmentally.
1. High contrast images
High contrast images are perfect for newborns to look at. High contrast images are a way for their brains to have a break from the over-stimulating world. I made my own high contrast cards. All I used were a black marker, paper, and a laminater. You could print out patterns, buy books, or play videos.
Talking to your little one is very important. It helps them learn how to speak and about the world. If it seems weird talking to your baby you can always sing to them. You can sing your favorite songs or you can make up your own. They’ll love it either way. Here are some super simple songs you can sing to your little one.
3. Play Mat
A play mat is a great way for babies to learn how to entertain themselves. As they are trying to reach for the toys they are also developing their motor skills. They can also be used for tummy time.
4. Tummy Time
Tummy time is a very important activity for babies. It allows them to develop shoulder and neck muscles. If you baby dislikes tummy time there are many things you can do to make it more enjoyable for them. You can prop them up on a pillow or blanket, or you can put them on top of a yoga ball. My personal favorite thing to do is put him on an elevated surface, get in from of him, and cheer him in on. I think sounding excited and happy encourages them to want to do it more, but don’t expect results right away it takes time.
5. Reading Books
It is NEVER too early to read to your little one. It is a great way to introduce them to literary concepts early on. Make sure you keep it fun, sound excited, and use different voices. Choose books that are age appropriate. If you do choose to read a longer book to a younger child try not to read it all at once. Here are some of our favorite books right now: Peek-A-Boo Forest, The Wonderful Things You Will Be, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Allowing baby to feel different fabrics is a great sensory activity. You can use clothes and fabrics from around the house. We used the animal cards from this set.
7. Kicking Activities
Kicking activities are great for motor development. They encourage kicking which strengthens the legs muscles. There are some plays mats that are made to encourage kicking. You can also put something that would make noise near their feet for them to kick.
8. Sitting up/ Standing Up
These are activities to be used with discretion. Your baby needs to have some head control before doing these. We all get tired of looking at the same things and babies are no different. Sitting or standing up your baby will give a new vantage point to take in the world.
9. Baby Toys
This one is a new brainer. Make sure the toys you get your little are age appropriate. Not sure what toys he/she will like, I like to take my son to the store and show him the toys. Whichever one he shows interest is what I get. I think this toy is perfect to help babies development their fine motor skills.
10. Being Silly
Making silly faces and sounds is a great way to entertain your little one. As they get older they may also try to be silly with you.
